Paediatric dentistry involves providing specialised oral health care for babies, children, and teens.

TREATMENTS

Depending on your little one’s age, dental experience, and oral health history, they may need any of the following services (you can click on each treatment to learn more about it):

Dr Libi will assess your child’s teeth according to their age and stage of dental development which is different for each child. She will monitor their growth and development of teeth and be on the lookout for any dental defects which may develop.
Dr Libi can teach your child how to brush and floss their teeth and even talk with them about which foods and drinks they should avoid to prevent dental cavities, she believes in educating children to make better choices. She uses her special Sugar Bug story to educate and motivate the whole family!

It is recommended you bring your child for their first dental check-up before their first birthday! The best time is usually as soon as their first tooth erupts. The sooner your child is exposed to the dental environment the more likely they are to feel comfortable and confident being there.
From that point Dr Libi will see your child twice a year for preventive exams and to monitor for any dental defects.
Dr Libi provides pre-appointment video calls as part of your first visit. This enables her to meet you and discuss your needs as a family, she will also explain what will happen when you visit the clinic based on your needs. It can help alleviate any anxiety you or your child have and answer any questions in advance. This ensures your first visit in the clinic is shorter and more fun.

X-rays are an important part of assessment of teeth, they enable us to see inside the teeth and jaws! But they are not taken unless needed and this need will be assessed by Dr Libi at each appointment. At Sunrise, we use digital x-rays which reduces the amount of radiation used.

For most children regular brushing is enough to keep their teeth clean and their gums healthy, but some children have a tendency for calculus deposits and may even have some staining which might benefit from professional cleaning.

In addition to using fluoride toothpaste, it is recommended that children have a fluoride varnish painted onto their teeth 2-4 times a year depending on their needs which are determined by Dr Libi at your child’s assessment appointment. This special fluoride varnish will help to strengthen your child’s teeth and stop holes from developing in them.

When your child’s adult molars erupt they are not fully mineralised, and therefore more susceptible to decay. At the same time, the anatomy of the chewing surface contains numerous grooves and deep pits, known as fissures. These fissures are usually so narrow that toothbrush bristles are unable to clean them properly. This means those sugar bugs Dr Libi talks about can make holes in these teeth easily. By painting on a fissure sealant, the top of the tooth is super smooth and easy to clean, which means those sugar bugs have nowhere to hide and make holes. Fissure sealed teeth are 80% less likely to get holes in them.

There are two types of sealants, one is generally used for younger patients where keeping the tooth dry is more difficult, this is called a Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) and the other is a resin sealant which is stronger but requires some cooperation to be able to keep the tooth dry for placement. Dr Libi will work with you and your child on a tooth to tooth basis to decide which is best.

In some cases a filling may be required for a baby or adult tooth, if this is the case your child may require some local anaesthetic (a numbing injection). This will help your child to be comfortable while their tooth is cleaned with the dental drill. Dr Libi only uses tooth coloured filling material.

Sometimes children’s baby front teeth can break down due to caries and even after addressing the underlying issues they can make you or your child unhappy due to their appearance. Dr Libi is able to provide aesthetic fillings to address this issue.

Some adult teeth come through with white spots, these are dental defects which are out of your hands, luckily Dr Libi has the tools in her hands to help you fix it for your child!
ICON is a new and fantastic treatment for these white spots and is considered to be a minimally invasive treatment as no tooth is cut away to treat it.
ICON can also treat white spots which occur after orthodontic treatment sometimes.

These are also a great option for young/ anxious patients as no local anaesthetic or drilling is needed and they have a high success rate of lasting until the tooth naturally falls out.

Dr Libi loves to call them “princess crowns” or “Ironman teeth”, kids love them too.

This is a common developmental anomaly seen in many children in the UK. It affects the first permanent molars and the permanent incisors, to varying degrees.

Dr Libi has the training as a paediatric dentist to ensure that your child has the right pathway of care planned for these teeth which will have different needs to unaffected teeth. They may be weaker in their enamel formation, more sensitive to heat/cold or just different in appearance. In all cases a paediatric dentist is essential to ensure the best long term planning for your child. Dr Libi’s approach is to minimise treatment in the short term but also in the long term, for your child’s well-being.

Dr Libi has a special interest in children’s mental health and loves working with anxious children to help them overcome their dental anxieties which are sometimes linked to their general anxieties. She has many different techniques to help your child and always takes extra time to build your child’s confidence and trust. She uses video calls as part of the plan to help children overcome their fears.

It is very common to be nervous about having dental treatment at any age.

Inhalation sedation is a light form of sedation. It is a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen breathed through a nosepiece. Inhalation sedation is also known as ‘happy air’. Inhalation sedation is does NOT make you go to sleep (it is not general anaesthesia). During the session your child will be awake and able to communicate how they are feeling and be able to make decisions, but they will feel very relaxed and able to accept treatment easier.

While Dr Libi does her best to make sure your child’s teeth are healthy and kept in place until they are naturally ready to fall out, sometimes it can be unavoidable and they will need to be removed. Dr Libi will do her best to ensure it’s a pain and stress free procedure. She uses her behavioural management skills, calming manner and sometimes a little happy gas to ensure things go really smoothly.

Some children’s bite may not be ideal, usually we wait for them to grow before we do any orthodontic treatment but in some cases it’s better to fix the bite while they are still growing. This may help to avoid future problems or minimise them.
Dr Libi works closely with Dr Mo to monitor your child’s growth and development to ensure they get the right orthodontic treatment at the right time, everything is meticulously planned with nothing left to chance!

To avoid long-term damage caused by sports injuries, it is important to wear a professionally made mouthguard during any sports activity that involves physical contact or moving objects, like cricket, hockey, football, American football, boxing and rugby.

A mouthguard will decrease the risk of damaging / breaking teeth and reduce the danger of dislocating the jaw.

The mouthguard is custom made to fit exactly over the teeth and gums to cushion and protect the teeth. Our in house digital lab will keep your original scan on file so that in the unfortunate incidence that you lose your mouthguard, in most cases we can make a replacement without having to see you.
