Preventative Treatment for Kids

Fluoride treatment

In addition to using fluoride toothpaste, it is recommended that children have a fluoride varnish painted onto their teeth 2-4 times a year depending on their needs which are determined by your dentist at your child’s assessment appointment. This special fluoride varnish will help to strengthen your child’s teeth and stop holes from developing in them.

Sealants

When your child’s adult molars erupt they are not fully mineralised, and therefore more susceptible to decay. Their position at the back of a small child’s mouth makes them difficult to access to keep them clean. At the same time, the anatomy of the chewing surface contains numerous grooves and deep pits, known as fissures. These fissures are usually so narrow that toothbrush bristles are unable to clean them properly. This means those sugar bugs your dentist talks about can make holes in these teeth easily.

By painting on a fissure sealant, the top of the tooth is super smooth and easy to clean, which means those sugar bugs have nowhere to hide and make holes. Fissure sealed teeth are 80% less likely to get holes in them. There are two types of sealants, one is generally used for younger patients where keeping the tooth dry is more difficult, this is called a Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) and the other is a resin sealant which is stronger but requires some cooperation to be able to keep the tooth dry for placement. Your dentist will work with you and your child on a tooth to tooth basis to decide which is best.

Hygienist cleaning

Hygiene therapy involves giving you and your child the tips and tricks required for you to care for their gums at home. Often it is essential to remove hard deposits of calculus (tartar) from your teeth to allow optimal dental hygiene and health. Plaque, discolouration and stubborn stains can be removed using modern using airflow therapy, a combination of water, compressed air and fine powder particles.

Our highly preventative, minimally invasive dental hygiene treatment is unlike traditional scaling and polishing as it is safe, gentle and relatively pain-free as it uses warm water. (The Piezon PS ultrasonic is very gentle and light in comparison to standard Ultrasonic scalers). The airflow treatment provided at Sunrise Dental Clinic is suitable for children who are able to cooperate for the procedure and highly advisable if your child has an orthodontic appliance.
