Management of Enamel defects
Children with enamel defects require special care for their teeth. They can sometimes be anxious about having dental treatment because their teeth feel more sensitive and react differently to dental treatments.
Dr Libi will be able to help you understand how to deal with your child’s enamel defect after evaluating your child’s teeth.
Dr Libi has the training as a paediatric dentist to ensure that your child has the right pathway of care planned for these teeth which will have different needs to unaffected teeth.
Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation (MIH)
This is a common developmental anomaly seen in many children in the UK. It affects the first permanent molars and the permanent incisors, to varying degrees.
They may be weaker in their enamel formation, more sensitive to heat/cold or just different in appearance.
Amelogenesis Imperfecta (AI)
This condition looks similar to MIH but has different origins. Unlike MIH, all teeth are affected and it is less common.
It is an genetic condition affecting the structure and appearance of the enamel of teeth
Teeth can be small, discoloured, pitted or grooved, and prone to rapid wear and breakage with early tooth decay and loss.
Generalised Hypomineralisation
It is becoming more common and can affect all the primary teeth and some or all of the adult teeth.
Like MIH the teeth may be weaker in their enamel formation, more sensitive to heat/cold or just different in appearance.
Management of Enamel Defects
In all cases a paediatric dentist is essential to ensure the best long term planning for your child. Dr Libi’s approach is to minimise treatment in the short term but also in the long term, for your child’s well-being. Dr Claire also works alongside Dr Libi to support children with enamel defects and deliver their dental care.
